Berlin has held celebrations to mark the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The barrier put up by communist East Germany in 1961 stood for 28 years as an emblem of oppression. Thousands gathered in the center of the German capital to remember the popular uprising which brought down the wall on November 9th, 1989, and ended the regime that built it. At the center of the celebrations is the Brandenburg Gate, once a symbol of division. Now long since reunited, Germany is facing a difficult political and economic outlook.
