The UK and several other countries paused funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency in Gaza on Friday after “several” staff members were fired for allegedly participating in the 7 October attack on Israel.
Asked for Labour’s view, the party’s shadow paymaster general Jonathan Ashworth said the allegations were “absolutely appalling” but he also said a “humanitarian catastrophe” is facing Palestinians in Gaza and called for more aid to be delivered to the strip.
He said: “What is happening is a catastrophe which is why, for example, we’ve also called for a halt in the fighting, an immediate humanitarian truce, a ceasefire, a sustained ceasefire is needed, but UNRWA programs have to continue. Current UNRWA programmes have to continue.”
