Flood water has forced thousands of people from their homes in Germany’s Salzland county.

A dyke has given way under the weight of the deluge – where the Elba and Saale rivers meet, south of the city of Magdeburg.

The Commissioner of Salzland County, Ulrich Gersterer, warned that people should not attempt to save the dyke:

“We were shocked to see that people are still trying to use sand bags to stabilise the summer dyke. From our point of view, they’re risking their lives – because every minute large amounts of water go through there.” Gersterer explained.
