The UK government has announced it’s almost doubling its aid for Sudan as the humanitarian crisis there continues to escalate, with over 8 million people displaced.

Foreign Office minister Andrew Mitchell MP told Sky News, from the border of Sudan and Chad, that the situation is “catastrophic” with famine and the fighting “bearing the hallmarks of ethnic cleansing”.

Andrew Mitchell said that with many of the displaced marching north, it is something that not only affects the region, but also “directly affects all of us in Europe as well”.
