It looked like a small but perhaps significant breakthrough in efforts to bring an end to the fighting in Ukraine.
At talks in the Turkish city of Istanbul, the Russian side committed itself to scaling back considerably military activity in two Ukrainian-held areas. It might seem like a step in the right direction, but Western intelligence services are urging caution.
After all, the merciless Russian bombardment of many targets across Ukraine continues.
