The Colombian parliament has voted to ban bullfighting. The ban means there are now only eight countries in the world where bullfighting takes place – including those where the animal isn’t killed.

Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly, by ninety-three votes to two, to phase out the practice by 2027. Bullfighting is popular in the country, with hundreds of events held each year, each attracting thousands of spectators. The law calls on the state to help the tens of thousands of people employed in bullfighting to find alternative employment.
