Policing minister Chris Philp announces a pledge to recruit 8,000 more police officers to “neighbourhoods” – to provide patrols and crime prevention in local areas.
Crime was down 50% since 2010 according to the national crime survey the minister said – with similar positive numbers around fraud and cybercrime.
He insisted that the prime minister Rishi Sunak is “out on the campaign trail meeting people”, despite not being seen publicly since leaving a D-Day event in France early.
