Alex Batty from Oldham, Greater Manchester, went missing in 2017, age 11, when he failed to return from a holiday with his mother, who doesn’t have legal parental guardianship, and his grandfather.
Now 17, he was found six years later by a medical student in the town of Revel, near Toulouse in the south of France.
Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes of Greater Manchester Police said the teenager’s grandmother confirmed his identity via video call but officers will make further checks when he returns to the UK in the coming days.
