Can Israel achieve its war aims in Gaza of eliminating Hamas without causing a humanitarian catastrophe?
Aaron David Miller, former US State Department negotiator for the Middle East, says it requires “magical thinking.” Miller, who is now a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told DW Tim Sebastian that he still thought a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians was the only long-term solution, especially in the wake of the October 7 Hamas attack — but not with the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or the administration of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Miller also thought domestic pressure in the US was mounting on US President Joe Biden to find an end to Israeli ground operations in Gaza.
