COP28: Governments agree for the first time to ‘transition away’ from fossil fuels

Estimated read time 2 min read

Today, representatives from nearly 200 countries agreed to a landmark deal to start “transitioning” away from fossil fuels .

The deal is not legally binding but calls on all countries to move away from the use of fossil fuels, for the first time in almost 30 years of COP climate summits.

It is a big leap forward from anything previously agreed at a COP climate summit but critics are disappointed it doesn’t involve tougher language and stronger commitments.

Earlier, US Climate Envoy John Kerry held a news conference following the plenary at COP28. You can watch that here
