Finland’s foreign minister: No easy way back to relations with Russia | Conflict Zone

Estimated read time 2 min read

Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen says “it is Russia who is responsible for the poor state of our relations”, and she thinks it will be hard to fix that relationship.

When it comes to the war in Ukraine, she believes “in some instances the rhetoric we hear from the Russians is much more aggressive than what they are really intending to pull through.”

She tells Conflict Zone’s Sarah Kelly “there is no such thing as too many euros or too many dollars for security.”

Looking at what she calls “instrumentalized migration” — the claim Russia is sending migrants to Finland with the aim of destabilization — Valtonen says “it could be treated as a fact that if a hostile country is trying to send people over, that immediately and in a geographically limited location there was not the right to seek asylum.”
