The Israeli military sounded sirens in two villages near the Gaza Strip, warning of possible rocket attacks from the Hamas-ruled enclave just minutes after a truce came into force. There was no immediate confirmation of any rocket attacks or damage. Violations of the ceasefire have been common in previous Gaza wars. The Qatari-mediated truce began at 7 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) with hostages expected to be released later in the day. Israel’s military has vowed to resume operations in Gaza once the four-day pause in fighting against Hamas ends.
