The UN estimates that five and half thousand expectant mothers are due to give birth in Gaza in the next month. Many of them don’t know if they will be able to do so safely. A lack of supplies means around 20 percent of pregnant women are likely to suffer complications.
Dr. Mohamed Elfar, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who is part of the American Medical Team with Rahma Worldwide, an independent humanitarian organization., joins Al Jazeera’s live from the European Hospital in Gaza.
He said just a few nights ago, doctors rushed to the ER upon hearing the ambulance. He continued that despite their efforts, they couldn’t save a young patient due to a lack of basic medications, equipment, and resuscitation tools. He stressed that this tragedy shouldn’t occur in the 21st century, anywhere in the world. Dr. Elfar added that supplies are scarce; the last they received was upon their arrival, which was quickly depleted.
