Harry Potter author challenges Scotland’s new anti-hate laws

Estimated read time 2 min read

Rishi Sunak has thrown his weight behind author JK Rowling after she challenged Scotland’s new laws aimed at protecting the trans community.

The prime minister said people should not be criminalised “for stating simple facts on biology”.

Ms Rowling had invited the Scottish government to arrest her after Siobhan Brown MSP, a Holyrood minister, said people “could be investigated” for misgendering someone online.

The new measures aim to tackle the harm caused by hatred and prejudice, extending protections from abusive behaviour to people on grounds including age, disability, religion, sexual orientation and transgender identity.
