Imran Khan’s 10-year jail sentence could galvanise voters

Estimated read time 1 min read

Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years on charges of having leaked official state secrets. The 71 year-old cricket star-turned-politician has been fighting legal battles since being removed from power in 2022. The sentencing comes the week before general elections in which he is barred from standing. His legal team said it would challenge the ruling. Khan claims all the charges against him are politically motivated, and still enjoys widespread support in Pakistan.
