Irish government admits defeat over referendums on family and women’s roles

The Irish government has been defeated in twin referendums aimed at changing the country’s constitution, Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has conceded.

Mr Varadkar, who said he wanted to remove “very old-fashioned language” in Ireland’s constitution, said it was clear the amendments were “defeated comprehensively”.

The family amendment had proposed extending the meaning of “family” beyond marriage, while the care amendment proposed deleting references to the centrality of a woman’s “life within the home”.
