Netanyahu rejects cease-fire proposal as US says he is “obstacle to peace” | DW News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected a ceasefire proposal put forward by Hamas. The Israeli premier called it, quote, “unrealistic.”

The proposal would have seen the release of women, children, elderly and sick hostages taken by Hamas in the October 7th terror attacks – in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

US President Joe Biden has praised a speech by the Senate’s top Democrat, Chuck Schumer, which called for new elections in Israel.

During a meeting with Ireland’s Prime Minister, Biden said Schumer had expressed concerns shared by many Americans. Schumer is the highest ranking Jewish called Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu an obstacle to peace who had, quote “lost his way.” He warned that Israel could not survive if it becomes a pariah. Netanyahu’s Likud party responded by calling on Schumer not to undermine Israel’s elected government.
