Sky’s political correspondent Rob Powell joined Sussex police while on patrol in Brighton, where shoplifters targeted stores in the lead up to Christmas.
Field officer Nick Strickland said one day a supermarket in the city saw “around 14 to 15 incidents” of theft in the first two hours it was open, with thieves targeting shops before security guards arrive.
Policing Minister Chris Philp told Sky News the cost of living crisis is “no excuse” for a rise in shoplifting as the UK’s benefits system is “very generous”.
