Rishi Sunak pledges ‘Triple Lock Plus’ pension allowance | Vote 2024

Estimated read time 2 min read

The prime minister has unveiled a £2.4bn pound tax break for pensioners.

The original triple lock pension policy was introduced by the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government in 2010 to tackle pensioner poverty.

Currently, pensioners can receive up to £12,750 a year of their pensions before they start paying income tax – the same figure applies to the personal allowance for those who work.

The new “Triple Lock Plus” policy would see the allowance rise in line with whichever is highest: average earnings, inflation or 2.5%.

Labour said the plan was “another desperate move” by the Tories.
