The US is stepping up its opposition to Israel’s assault on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza. President Joe Biden says that he will withhold specific weapons deliveries to Israel if it attacks population centers and that he regrets that Palestinian civilians have been killed by US-made bombs. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say their goal is to root out Hamas militants believed to be operating in the city. On Monday, Israeli forces ordered the evacuation of more than a 100,000 Palestinians from parts of Rafah, ahead of their operation.
