Ukraine is marking an anniversary of infamy. Two years since Vladimir Putin launched his war on a nation he denies even exists. A war Russians are forbidden even to call a war.
Ukraine has survived, paying a terrible human cost. Recently its forces have been on the back foot. Ceeding small amounts of territory on land — even as it scores important successes at sea.
In 2023 the front lines remained largely in place. Ukraine’s much vaunted offensive failed to repeat the successes of a year before — where Ukraine recaptured big swathes of territory occupied by Russia. But even outgunned and outmanned, Ukraine is reasserting its hold on that territory.
