It’s not clear how many people have been killed in the war in Ukraine. The New York Times put the total including civilians at half a million in August.
Estimates of the number of soldiers killed on the Ukrainian side vary between 35,000 and 70,000. And depending on the source, as many as 300,000 Russian troops are said to have been killed. Most sources put the number of Russian casualties sigificantly higher than Ukrainian losses. Some 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers and around 200,000 Russians are thought to have been wounded.
But these numbers count only physical wounds. They do not include the mental ones. Ukraine has had to scale up quickly to help its soldiers build up their mental resilience. Max Zander reports from Kyiv.
