Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has defended the latest NHS figures after some key government targets – including those relating to A&E waiting times – were missed.
Mr Sunak admitted that “we haven’t made as much progress as I would’ve liked” but claimed “today’s figures show that we are making headway”.
Meanwhile, the shadow health secretary, Wes Streeting, described ambulance response times as “an absolute disaster”, adding: “The NHS is still in the grips of the worse crisis in its history.”
The state of the health service is likely to become a crucial issue for voters ahead of the upcoming local elections and the next general election.
