In the U.S., authorities have issued storm surge and hurricane warnings for much of the Texas coast as Tropical Storm Beryl advances across the Gulf of Mexico. Beryl struck Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 2 hurricane on Friday before weakening to a tropical storm. Meteorologists anticipate the storm will regain hurricane strength in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, potentially reaching southern Texas as early as Sunday night. In preparation for landfall, acting Texas Governor Dan Patrick has issued a preemptive disaster declaration for 40 counties.
