In the run up to this year’s US presidential election, much is being made about the thousands of migrants crossing the country’s southern border.

Many trying to enter the US come from halfway across the world – including places like Afghanistan. Fearing for their lives under Taliban rule, they make the treacherous journey through South America and onto the US-Mexican crossing.

DW has spoken to one family who faced people traffickers, mountains and jungles in the hope of starting a new life in the United States. We have disguised their faces to protect their identity.

For more on the plight of those Afghan refugees, we talk to Waslat Hasrat, Nazimi, head of DW’s Dari and Pashto department.

And we talk to Fereshta Abbasi. He is a Researcher in the Asia division at Human Rights Watch and joins us now.
