Welcome to The Day. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has awarded the former chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces his country’s highest honor.
President Zelenskyy bestowed upon General Valerii Zaluzhnyi the title “Hero of Ukraine,” at a ceremony in Kyiv. It came a day after the president replaced General Zaluzhnyi as commander-in-chief — in a shake-up aimed at regaining the initiative in the war with Russia. The general is regarded by many Ukrainians as a national hero for overseeing Ukraine’s defence following Russia’s invasion.
